Greystone, Hoover: homes, schools, parks and commute

Greystone is the planned golf community at Hoover’s eastern end, along U.S. 280 in Shelby County, about 12 miles by road from City Hall. OpenStreetMap maps the Greystone Golf and Country Club and the homes around it, and Hoover’s comprehensive plan names Greystone as a planned development with lots still to build. It is almost entirely single-family homes, many on the golf course.

Where it is

In the school system’s parcel layer (2023 county tax records), 5,566 parcels carry Greystone in their subdivision name, among them the numbered Greystone sectors, Greystone Legacy, Greystone Farms and North Lake at Greystone. 5,530 are inside Hoover, 5,508 of them in Shelby County; 26 are in unincorporated Shelby County and 10 in Birmingham. Census ZIP code areas put Greystone in 35242, which carries a Birmingham mailing address, so the mailing city is not a guide to which city a home is in. The comprehensive plan’s table of approved development counted 109 single-family lots still to be built in Greystone as of March 30, 2019. The plan says sewer service in the Greystone vicinity comes from a private company, Southwest Water, not the city or Jefferson County.

Schools

Scores are each school’s overall score on the 2025 state report card (the 2024-25 school year).

All the Hoover parcels named Greystone fall in the Greystone Elementary zone on the district’s map, which also covers the Hoover part of Inverness. Homes here are in Shelby County but are served by Hoover City Schools because they are inside Hoover. Home values and taxes

The typical home value in ZIP code 35242 was $565,170 in September 2026, up 3.0% from $548,598 in September 2025, according to the Zillow Home Value Index. The index is a modeled typical value for the middle third of homes, not a sale price. Zillow files 35242 under Birmingham, and the ZIP also covers Inverness and unincorporated parts of Shelby County, so it is not a Greystone figure alone. The Hoover figure was $437,458, up 2.9%.

The state’s 2025 millage table puts the Shelby County part of Hoover at 66.5 mills, against 72.6 on the Jefferson County side. More in our home prices and property taxes guides.

Parks and trails

The comprehensive plan lists Greystone among the communities on Hoover’s far east side that were far from a city park in 2019, and notes that some planned communities have their own private open space. The nearest parks on the city’s list are along Valleydale Road and Inverness Parkway:

• Inverness Nature Park and Trails, 98 Inverness Center Parkway: 77 wooded acres with hiking trails, picnic areas and an 18-hole disc golf course, according to the city’s park page.
• Veterans Park, 4800 Valleydale Road: 82 acres with a 5K cross-country trail, playgrounds, beach volleyball, a veterans memorial and a four-acre lake, beside Spain Park High, according to the city’s park page.

Getting around

• Interstates: U.S. 280 runs northwest to I-459 at exit 19, about 6.5 miles by road from the middle of Greystone.
• City Hall: about 12.7 miles by road to 100 Municipal Lane.
• Airport: about 18 miles by road to Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. Distances are measured on the OpenStreetMap road network with the OSRM routing engine; they are distances, not drive times.
• Buses: MAX Transit Route 280 (Highway 280) stops on U.S. 280, the nearest at the Walmart Supercenter, about 2.2 miles from the middle of Greystone in a straight line, according to MAX Transit’s schedule data.
