Outdoors in Hoover

  • Moss Rock Preserve: 349 acres with nearly 12 miles of hiking trails, waterfalls and a Boulder Field for climbing. The city publishes a hiking map.
  • EXPLORE Playground, 1060 RV Trace: the 15,000-square-foot inclusive playground at the Hoover Met Complex is free and open from sunrise to sunset year-round. Its splash pad does not open until May 15.
  • Veterans Park, 4800 Valleydale Road: a walking trail around a 4-acre lake, playgrounds and beach volleyball courts.
  • Aldridge Gardens, 3530 Lorna Road: open daily 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. unless weather or an event closes it.
  • Black Creek Mountain Bike Park, 5571 Stadium Trace Parkway: 5 miles of trails for all levels.

Day trip: Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park, 200 Terrace Drive in Pelham, is Alabama’s largest state park at 11,861 acres, with more than 100 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. It is open 7 a.m. until sunset. Spring break picks from the park’s page:

  • Peavine Falls and the Oak Mountain Interpretive Center
  • The Treetop Nature Trail boardwalk, where the Alabama Wildlife Center’s resident birds can be seen
  • A pump track and BMX course, marina rentals and an 18-hole golf course

Indoors

  • Hoover Public Library, 200 Municipal Drive: the library’s spring 2027 programs were not yet on its event calendar as of Oct. 17. The Library Theatre’s season brings The High Kings on Sunday, March 21, the day before break, at 3 and 7 p.m. (event page).
  • Hoover Recreation Center, Municipal Drive: indoor pool, gym and walking track for members. Hours are 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday, according to the city. Call 205-444-7703.
  • Hoover Heights Climbing Center at the Finley Center, 5508 Stadium Trace Parkway.

At the Hoover Met

Spring break is tournament season at the Hoover Met Complex. In 2026 the complex hosted the Perfect Game Spring Break Championship on its baseball fields on March 21-22, according to its event calendar. The 2027 schedule was not posted as of Oct. 17.
