Amwaste picks up Hoover trash twice a week; the second pickup is sorted for recycling. Carts out by 6:30 a.m. Bulk pickup and issues: 205-739-7311.
Last checked Oct. 17, 2026. Updated each year. Facts on this page come from the City of Hoover’s Trash & Recycling and Pickup Schedule pages.
The City of Hoover contracts with Amwaste for household trash pickup. Most homes get two pickups a week. The first is for household garbage and small bulk and brush, and it goes to the landfill. The second is a “mixed stream” pickup that goes to RePower South, where recyclables are separated from the waste. Carts need to be at the curb by 6:30 a.m. on both days, because routes can start that early.

What day is my pickup?
Type your address into the city’s Hoover Trash Pickup Schedule map to see your two pickup days. The city’s own examples use two pairs of days: Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday.
Placement rules from the city’s Trash & Recycling page:
- Carts go at the curb with the arrows on the lid pointing to the street, no more than 3 feet from the curb.
- Keep carts off the sidewalk, storm drains and the gutter, out from under low utility lines, and at least 6 feet from mailboxes, hedges, parked cars and other fixed objects.
- Bag household garbage and loose leaves, pine straw and small limbs, and put the bags in the cart.
- No single bag or container may weigh more than 50 pounds.
- Crews cannot cross the street for a cart set out after the truck has passed. A late cart waits for your next pickup day.
How recycling works in Hoover
There is no separate recycling cart. Everything collected on your second pickup of the week goes to RePower South, which separates recyclables from mixed household waste. The city says you do not need to sort or clean recyclables, and bagged recycling and household waste can go in together. If you want your recyclables to be recovered, hold them until the second pickup.
Two rules differ on the second day: no bags outside the cart are picked up, and the city does not keep a list of accepted materials, because RePower South decides what it can extract. The city points residents to the EPA’s common recyclables guide for general advice.
Holiday schedule
Amwaste does not operate on six holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Service is delayed by one day after the holiday, and the city says the week is adjusted so every home still gets two pickups. In the city’s Memorial Day example, Monday and Thursday customers are picked up Tuesday and Friday, and Tuesday and Friday customers on Wednesday and Saturday.
The holidays still to come this year and next, with the city’s one-day rule applied:
| Holiday | Date | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving | Thursday, Nov. 26 | Thursday pickup moves to Friday, Nov. 27; Friday pickup to Saturday, Nov. 28 |
| Christmas | Friday, Dec. 25 | Friday pickup moves to Saturday, Dec. 26 |
| New Year’s Day | Friday, Jan. 1, 2027 | Friday pickup moves to Saturday, Jan. 2 |
Every other holiday, including Columbus Day and Veterans Day, runs on the normal schedule. The city says the holiday schedule can change when landfills change their hours, and it posts any change on the Pickup Schedule page. When snow or ice makes roads unsafe, Amwaste pulls its trucks until the roads clear.
Bulk, limbs and leaves
Bulk and limb pickups are booked through MyHooverConnect or at 205-739-7311. The city schedules large bulk and limb piles for collection within 10 days. Any bagged debris of two or more bags outside the cart also needs a request.
- Put items no more than 3 feet from the curb, away from overhead lines.
- Branches can be no longer than 6 feet.
- Take glass out of any item and put it in a separate container, such as a cardboard box.
- Refrigerators, freezers and other appliances that use Freon need a removal tag from a certified technician first.
- Bagged leaves go at the curb; then request a pickup.
- Live Christmas trees go at the curb on your normal pickup day.
Amwaste will take rolled carpet, broken-down moving boxes, bagged packing materials, appliances, mattresses, household batteries, fluorescent bulbs and household amounts of pesticides and fertilizers. It will not take large amounts of construction debris (bricks, concrete, tile, dirt), tires, car batteries, large car parts, cross ties or landscape ties, needles or animal carcasses. Debris from landscapers, tree services, roofers and remodelers must be hauled off by the contractor.
Household hazardous waste day
Paint, motor oil, pesticides and other hazardous waste do not go in the cart. The city holds one collection day a year, and the next is scheduled for Saturday, April 3, 2027, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Hoover Public Safety Building, 2020 Valleydale Road, according to the Household Hazardous Waste Day page. It is for Hoover and Indian Springs residents only, with a photo ID showing your address; no businesses. The city says it takes household chemicals, paints, batteries, automotive fluids, electronics, medications, guns and ammunition. Paper shredding is not part of the event.
Latex paint dried completely solid in the can, with the lid off, can go in regular trash. The city suggests cat litter, sand or sawdust to speed up drying.
New homes and moving in
If you move into a home that already had service, nothing needs to be done. If the previous owners took the cart, request a new one through MyHooverConnect. For new construction, the home has to be occupied before service starts; call 205-739-7311.
What this means for you

- Carts out by 6:30 a.m., arrows facing the street.
